Portraits

Portraits, is a body of work created from the people who’ve come in and out of her life during the past few years. After moving from a large studio to a smaller one, Kaplan was unable to continue her notable large sculpture work. Also at this time she found herself at home a lot, surrounded by a rotating cast of help for her husband.

She decided to capture a sense of each of the people in her life—not striving for photographic representation, but seeking something more intrinsic about the individuals. Inspired by Francis Bacon’s portraits, Kaplan also is trying to find something deeper about a person through paintings that are both distorted and yet vaguely recognizable.
